4 Psychology-Based Design Tips to Improve User Engagement On Your Web Page

Most people think that web designing requires you to be artistic and creative. And although there is some merit to that, you just need to apply some psychology into the mix so that you will increase user engagement.

1. Colors and Typefaces Matter, A Lot

Have you seen popular brands like Coca-Cola and Samsung? Just upon hearing those words, you might have already thought of their company logos. There is a reason why certain brands use specific colors in their branding, and that is because of Psychology.

You see, different colors evoke different emotions in people. For instance, light orange evokes interest in us while using a lighter shade of blue can create pensiveness.

These are backed by science and this is why companies use certain colors more than the others (this is true, even though there are plenty of colors to choose from).

So, when choosing a color, ask yourself what emotions you want to evoke in a person? Do you want them to be happy? Do you want to improve their mood? Do you want to spark their interest? Decide which of the options you want to happen and then stick to the color that invokes those emotions.

Typefaces are also important. The style and the size of the font can make a huge impact when done right.

For articles, you want to use a font that is easily readable. If we are talking about backgrounds, you can be creative and go for a more dynamic font that looks like abstract shapes.

2. Layouts are Important for Grabbing Their Attention

We are programmed to look at anomalies or things that are “off”. With this knowledge, using the symmetrical layout will just not stand out.

For this reason, you want to use asymmetrical layouts if you want to grab your visitors’ attention. This is especially useful for content or graphics that you want to put more emphasis on.

3. Keeping Things Simple is Key

There was this experiment conducted where people were given some jams to try. There is a group where they were given 24 choices of jam while the other was only given 6 different varieties. Which group do you think bought more of those jams? You might be surprised to know that the second group had bought more than the first one.

The reason is simple: the fewer choices we have, the better we are in deciding which to choose. The same principle can be applied in web design.

Since we are bombarded with a lot of information on a daily basis, you want to ensure that your visitors are given only the data that they need to see.

To put it simply, do not put too much fluff and other non-essential elements on your site. The simpler and clutter-free the design, the higher the conversion rate.

4. Use Your Design to Create a Personal Connection

Part of the reason why businessmen create websites is that they want to connect with their customers. As a web designer, it will be your job to make that happen.

There are some ways you can do this. First, you can conduct interviews and surveys to see what features people would want to have on a website, especially when it involves them buying some stuff from there.

Second, how can you implement a design theme that will not only evoke certain emotions, but also keeps users intrigued? Well, you want to apply a design that can tell a story. People love stories and they would much rather buy from a website that involves some form of storytelling than a site that is just plain and boring with no drama involved.
